HOSPITAL FLOORING NEEDS

Low Maintenance
Low maintenance is very important for hospitals as they deal with 24-hour foot traffic. Look for no wax products to simplify cleaning.

Infection Control
Critical for reducing the spread of infections. We recommend products with antimicrobial properties that can be flash coved.

High Durability
High PSI ratings are necessary for static and rolling loads such as carts, wheelchairs, beds, and other medical equipment.

Anti-Slip
Strong surface traction is crucial for helping patients stay back on their feet while on the path to recovery.
Hospital Applications

Entrance Area Flooring
Entrances are the first area that patients, families and visitors will see when entering a hospital. As such, they will experience the heaviest and most consistent foot traffic throughout the day. You’ll want to choose a flooring that is extremely durable & low maintenance, as well as one that does a good job of promoting your design vision to set a great first impression.
- Design Tip: LVT is great for performance durability and design versatility.
- Most Popular: Texas Granite & Mirra

Patient Room Flooring
Hospital rooms are designed to emulate home-like environments to make patients feel more comfortable. Unlike operating rooms that must have aseptic flooring, you have more options for materials within patient rooms. Floor design, required maintenance, and durability against static loads are all factors that must be considered when selecting your desired floor covering.
- Design Tip: Evidence based design suggests natural elements promote healing. This includes flooring materials that mimic natural wood or stone.
- Most Popular: Sonata or Sonata Elements

Corridor Flooring
Similar to entrance areas, corridor flooring must have the durability to withstand heavy 24-hour use. It must also provide great surface protection against scratches & scuffs for rolling loads that may be difficult to maneuver in narrow hallways. This includes equipment carts, stretchers, med carts and wheelchairs that can be difficult to maneuver in these narrow hallways.
- Design Tip: Wayfinding patterns and themes can be used to create functional, directional pathways.
- Most Popular: Texas Granite & ABPure

Operating Room Flooring
Operating rooms must meet the highest standards for infection control and indoor air quality. You’ll want easy-to-clean materials that require less maintenance procedures, like one of our many “No-wax” flooring options. To minimize risk of infections, select a floor covering that contains antimicrobial properties and is flexible enough to be heat welded and flashed coved.
- Most Popular: Texas Granite

Cafeteria Flooring
The best flooring for cafeterias are stain resistant, easy to clean and slip resistant. Cafeterias should be a comfortable environment that reduces stress and promotes relaxation. LVT and rubber are great solutions with plenty of design versatility of vibrant colors and natural textures.
- Design Tip: Use a patterned, textured floor to hid scuffs and scratches.
- Most Popular: Texas Granite

Flooring for Nurse Stations
Nurse’s stations are always occupied and require flooring materials that can be easily cleaned or replaced. Many hospitals have moved away from traditional linoleum or VCT for these work stations and have gone to LVT or sheet vinyl with low-VOC emissions and superior durability.
- Design Tip: Use a natural materials and patterns to reduce stress.
- Most Popular: Mirra

Flooring for Rehabilitation Areas
Rehab facilities must be easy to clean, highly resistant to scratches and scuffs, and highly slip resistant. This flooring is crucial in the healing process with helping patients get back to their feet while preventing falls and minimizing the risk of infections.
- Design Tip: Use cross-placed planks as a functional distance markers for exercises
- Most Popular: Mirra & ABPure

HOSPITAL FLOORING -FAQ
What Flooring is used in Hospitals?
In an effort to create healthier building designs, hospitals have undergone a shift in their preferred building materials. Transitioning away from traditional linoleum and vinyl composition tile (VCT) flooring options to others that are made from low-VOC materials such as LVT, solid vinyl tiles (SVT), rubber, and sheet vinyl.
These newer flooring materials provide the least toxic solutions for floor covering, actively promoting the health and well being of doctors and patients alike.
What Environmental Resources Should Be Considered?
- LEED for Healthcare – Rating system for flooring that factors evidence-based design and indoor air quality. Developed by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC).
- FloorScore – Rating system for flooring that evaluates dangerous VOC emission levels and compliance. Developed by the Resilient Floor Covering Institute (RFCI).
- Green Guide for Healthcare – Healthcare facility guide for creating healthy and sustainable design, construction and operations (GGHC).
- ecoScorecard – Composite tool that evaluates flooring products with most popular rating systems.
Why is Electrostatic Flooring (ESD) Important?
Static electricity can provide several problems for healthcare facilities, including:
- Unpleasant electrostatic shock during routine handling of equipment
- Electromagnetic disturbances of advanced imaging equipment, medical devices, and computing equipment.
- Malfunctioning of technology – which could pose serious risks to the safety of patients.
- Danger from volatile chemical agents that may cause ignition or explosions
Do you carry static control Flooring?
Yes! Our Electrotile solid vinyl flooring is a homogeneous conductive (CVT) and static dissipative tile (SDT/ESD). A great fit to protect against electrostatic discharge in sensitive areas like operating rooms, pre-op staging areas, anesthesiology, intensive care units, laboratories, and MRI and CT imaging areas.
What is the Healthiest Flooring For Hospitals?
As seen above, we offer a variety of best-in-class healthy flooring solutions for hospitals. Our most popular healthcare product is “Texas Granite” , an SVT known to check all the boxes:
- Ecofriendly – low VOCs & high indoor air quality
- Flash coved – extending flooring up to wall to provide the highest level of hygiene for sanitary environments
- No wax – no sealers, polish, refreshers, wax, or any other additional chemicals required! Cutting down on facility downtime as well.
- Micro-ground edge – Providing a seamless look that is easier to clean.
- Dense formulation – 2500 PSI rating to handle rolling and static loads – shortening on facility downtime
