Life-cycle cost

Texas Granite is a solid vinyl tile that never needs wax or floor finish. Measured on total life-cycle cost, not just the price per square foot, it costs less to own than waxed VCT, and its initial cost is over 30% below terrazzo.

Average annual maintenance cost, 100,000 sq ft installation

  • ~$2M Saved over 15 years vs. VCT

Cumulative life-cycle savings, 100,000 sq ft installation

  • < 5 years Payback vs. VCT

No wax, no strip, no finish

  • Daily dust mop and damp mop with a neutral cleaner
  • Annual deep scrub, plus a quarterly dry buff for high shine
  • No floor finish, stripping or wax to buy, apply or schedule around
  • Waxed VCT needs monthly spray buffs, quarterly finish and an annual strip and wax

What a life-cycle cost analysis counts

  • Initial cost
  • Routine maintenance
  • Facility downtime
  • Repairability
  • Product life span
  • Replacement cost

Figures are from the manufacturer's life-cycle cost analysis of a 100,000 sq ft installation compared with VCT and terrazzo. Labor rates, product and maintenance costs are based on past projects, industry knowledge and national averages; results for your facility will vary. Life expectancy is based on past projects and existing installations and does not represent a warranty of product or installation.

Overview

Texas Granite is American Biltrite's homogeneous solid vinyl tile. Homogeneous means the granite-style fleck and color run all the way through the full thickness of the tile rather than sitting in a printed layer, so surface wear exposes more of the same floor instead of a different material underneath.

The surface is a no-wax, high-gloss finish and no floor finish is required, which takes the strip-and-recoat cycle out of the maintenance program. A floor finish may be applied if a facility's own maintenance program calls for one, but none is needed to protect the tile. Micro-ground edges let the tiles close into a near-seamless field without welding.

American Biltrite rates Texas Granite at 2,500 PSI static load per ASTM F970, against about 150 PSI for standard vinyl composition tile (VCT). That margin is why it is specified for hospital corridors, imaging suites and school cafeterias where beds, carts and equipment cross the floor every day.

The standard range runs to thirty colorways, from neutral grays and beiges to fully saturated primaries. American Biltrite's MyTexasGranite tool can be used to build custom duo, trio or from-scratch colorways, and because the color runs all the way through the tile it cuts cleanly for inlays such as crests and wayfinding bands. Static dissipative and conductive versions are available as Electrotile.

The manufacturer offers a 20-year limited commercial warranty, and a FloorScore certificate (SCS-FS-01495) is listed for the product. Confirm sizes and current documentation with your account executive before specifying.

Installation and care

Maintenance

No floor finish required. Texas Granite's no-wax, high-gloss surface is the finish, so the maintenance program has no stripping, sealing or recoating cycle. Routine care follows American Biltrite's maintenance instructions, linked under Documents.

A floor finish may be applied if a facility's own maintenance program calls for one, but none is needed to protect the tile.
