Overview
ABDefender is American Biltrite's fire-retardant, low-smoke rubber compound for stair treads. It is designed for emergency exits, egress areas and the exit stairways of high-rise buildings, where smoke development is part of the code case. American Biltrite's Product Overview states that the treads meet the ASTM E84 standard test method for smoke and fire.
Each tread is molded as a single piece from the nosing down the riser, so there is no seam at the nosing, where stair wear concentrates. The surface is a raised round profile molded into the tread, and carborundum strips in black, red or yellow can be set into the tread to add grip and act as a visual aid marking the line of each step.
The ABDefender range has six colorways: Onyx Black, Polished Pewter, Night Sky, Carriage Grey, Battle Grey and Warm Stone. Each has a matching landing tile in 18" × 18" and 36" × 36" nominal sizes, so the stair and its landings read as one surface. American Biltrite states that the full stair tread program is Declare Red List Free.
