Performance

Slip-resistant commercial flooring

Slip resistance for resilient and rubber flooring comes from surface texture, the finish and how the floor is kept clean, not from a single number. Manufacturers publish test results for their products, and the method and conditions behind each result decide what it means.

This page covers resilient sheet, tile and rubber. For porcelain tile, where wet DCOF under ANSI A326.3 applies, see the Slip resistance (DCOF) page.

A published value describes the product as tested. Contaminants, footwear, maintenance chemistry and any finish applied on site can change the result, so confirm the current test report and the maintenance guide before specifying.

Evaluation criteria

How to evaluate options

  • Test method and conditions stated on the manufacturer's data sheet
  • Surface texture or embossing suited to wet or dry use of the room
  • No-wax finish, so site-applied polish does not change traction
  • Maintenance chemistry and schedule approved by the manufacturer
  • Slip-resistant stair treads on egress stairs
  • For porcelain tile, use wet DCOF and the ANSI A326.3 use categories
